Traditional Signwriting & Gilding
Russ Young | 07939182434 | email@example.com
Welcome, I am a traditional signwriter specialising in hand painted and gold leaf signs.
I like to work closely with my clients to create unique signs that represent their business with quality and care. My work draws upon the vast history of sign writing, with a particular interest in the signs and typography of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. I hope to recapture some of the craftsmanship of those bygone eras, and bring it forward into the modern world to be enjoyed again.
A hand painted sign has many advantages. They are often less expensive than most modern forms of signage and age more gracefully. Signwriting is also very versatile and I can paint onto a variety of surfaces including brick, textured rendering, timber, metal, lightweight composite and glass. Signs can be made and shipped nationwide, or painted directly on site.
I also design custom logotypes, supplied in a digital format to compliment your hand-painted signage.
I hope you enjoy browsing through my work and if you have any questions or would like a quote, then please get in touch.

"Russ Young of The Sign Artist was recently contracted to sign paint sixteen of the doors in our newly refurbished Moscar Lodge. I was impressed by his professionalism, artistry and attention to detail and would heartily recommend him to those who require hand-painted signs of quality."
The Duchess of Rutland, Belvoir Castle.
"Russ Young was recently commissioned to paint three murals that had been designed for Kelham Island Museum by Eleven Design Consultants Limited. The murals celebrate the heritage of Kelham Island, and will be viewed by thousands of visitors each year to navigate their way to our Museum, as well as creating an iconic welcome to our site. Given the importance of these murals, it was so reassuring and helpful to work with such a friendly, positive and talented artist who was able to effortlessly translate the designs directly to our historic buildings. Russ was at complete ease working in the sometimes challenging historic buildings (working at height and at one point directly above a locomotive!) It was wonderful to watch the murals emerge, and visitors have responded so well to the new designs – expertly painted with upmost professionalism and commitment.”
Chris Keady, Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust
"We worked with Russ Young on signage for our In & Out of Hospitals arts programme. We asked him to translate graphic scores and musical compositions, which he did beautifully. We also used his work in a participatory music event that included people with hearing impairments. The work he made will be installed at the Hearing Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It was great to work with Russ.”
Mir Jansen, Arts Coordinator, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
"After seeing Russ’ work on Instagram we knew straight away that we wanted him to paint our shop sign for our tattoo studio. He was very friendly and helpful throughout the whole process and we are so happy with the end results. The sign looks traditional and has received a lot of great feedback. We hope to work with Russ on many more projects in the future and highly recommend him."
Laura Brown, Browns Tattoo Studio, Chesterfield.
"We are very happy with the indoor wall sign which we recently purchased from The Sign Artist. From a range of bespoke lettering styles, we were able to choose the one that projected exactly the right atmosphere for our shop. Thanks for the good work!"
Kelly Smith, Cry Baby Tattoo, Sheffield.
"I came across Russ and his beautiful work on Instagram so I contacted him regarding a new hand painted sign for outside my tattoo studio. From initial contact to receiving my amazing classic style hand painted sign (which included the most beautiful detailed gold leaf finished lettering I have ever seen) was an absolute pleasure. I was always kept in the loop, from the design process through to the very end. The final result was even better than I had possibly imagined and adds a beautiful touch to my studio and the street where it hangs. I look forward to working with Russ again in the future and could not recommend him and his amazing craft highly enough, thank you."
Roy Keane, Owner of Soul Addiction, Limerick, Ireland.
“ I employed Russ to paint the sign for my business premises, ’Sew in the City'. As I’m based in a listed building and selling creativity it was crucial that I had someone who understood what I was trying to achieve visually and as soon as I met Russ I was confident I’d chosen the right person. He consulted me every step of the way but also advised how best to achieve the look I wanted. I was so pleased with the signage that I engaged him to do white gold leaf lettering on the window and the result is amazing. He is extremely careful with a great eye for design and a thorough understanding of lettering and branding as well as being an absolute perfectionist."
Kerrie Broughton-Glerup, Owner of Sew In The City, Sheffield.

We would highly recommend, without reservation, The Sign Artist to any business seeking personal attention, craftsmanship and skill for their branding and signs.”
